Classic vs Block Themes
Theme Basics
Preview
Two ways themes are built
Classic themes
- Built with PHP templates and the Customizer
- Highly customisable with menus and widgets
- Still used by thousands of popular themes
Block themes
- Built around the Site Editor and blocks
- Edit everything — header, footer, everywhere — visually
- Use global styles for colours and fonts
- The direction WordPress is moving (Twenty Twenty-Five and newer)
Which should you choose?
| You want… | Choose… |
|---|---|
| Stability and widgets | A classic theme |
| Full visual control | A block theme |
| A fast, modern default | Twenty Twenty-Five |
| Drag-and-drop design | A block theme + Site Editor |
Tip: Both are fine. If you are new, a block theme gives you the most control without code.
