What Modding Actually Is: Softmods vs Hardware Mods
Two very different worlds
The word "modding" covers two completely different practices. Softmods change the software that runs on a console; hardware mods change the machine itself. Understanding the difference is the foundation of every professional decision you will make in this course.
Softmods
A softmod uses software - an exploit, a save-game trick, a custom firmware flash - to make the console do something the manufacturer did not intend. Examples include FreeMcBoot on the PS2, HEN on the PS3, a WebKit jailbreak on the PS4, and RCM payload injection on the Switch.
Hardware mods
A hardware mod physically changes the console: installing a mod chip, an optical drive emulator (ODE), a region switch, or a replacement board. Hardware mods require soldering, are usually riskier, and can permanently alter or damage the machine.
What mods are actually for
- Legal homebrew - independent software: file managers, media players, emulators, backups
- Preservation - running and backing up software that is no longer sold
- Convenience - fan control, region-free playback, custom themes
- Piracy - the illegal side: playing games you do not own - which is not part of this course
Warning: Most of what makes modding newsworthy - downloading games you do not own, sharing backups - is piracy and is illegal in essentially every country. This course teaches the legal, responsible side only.
