Custom Firmware & Homebrew Explained

Software that replaces the rules

Every console boots its own operating system - the firmware. Custom firmware (CFW) replaces or extends that system so it will run code the manufacturer blocked. Homebrew is the independent software that runs on it. Together they unlock a console's potential - legally, for the right purposes.

How firmware works

When a console powers on, it runs a boot chain: low-level boot code, then the system firmware, then signed applications. Security checks at each stage verify that code is authentic and signed by the manufacturer. CFW replaces part of that chain so the checks are bypassed or relaxed, allowing unsigned code - homebrew - to run.

Two approaches: flash vs run

• Flashing CFW - writes a modified firmware to the console (e.g. PS3 CFW on early models)
• HEN-style - enables homebrew on the stock firmware without flashing (e.g. PS3 HEN, PS4 jailbreaks)
• Payload injection - pushes a small program during boot to load CFW (e.g. Switch RCM, TegraXplorer)

What homebrew gives you

• File managers and backup tools - manage saves, drives and owned backups
• Emulators - legally run old systems for preservation and play
• Quality-of-life tools - fan control, themes, overrides
• Media players and utilities - the console does more than the manufacturer allowed

Warning: CFW is powerful, which means it is also risky. A failed flash can brick the console, and going online with custom firmware can get the console banned. The next lessons cover doing it safely.
