Modding Service Business Basics
The business under the bench
A modding service succeeds on the same fundamentals as any skilled trade: clear pricing, honest policy, written agreements and organised records. The mods are the easy part - the business is what keeps it alive.
Pricing modding work
- Time - firmware installs, backups and testing take real hours
- Risk - the value of the console you might damage is part of your price
- Software - some tools, drives and kits cost you money to buy
- Guarantee - your price must cover an honest warranty on the work
The paperwork
- Written quote - the job, the price, what is included
- Signed consent - risks explained, no-piracy policy accepted
- Backup record - what was backed up, where it is stored, how to restore it
- Repair log - console model, firmware, tools, dates, results
The no-piracy policy
Make your policy public and written: "I install legal homebrew and backups of games you own. I do not install pirated games." A clear public policy filters out the wrong customers and protects you with the rest. It also wins you respect - and referrals - from the majority who want an honest service.
Warning: A modding business without written agreements is a business one argument away from a refund, a complaint or a legal headache. Paperwork is not bureaucracy - it is your protection.
Check your understanding
What three things should your price reflect? Time, risk to the console, and the cost of tools/software plus your guarantee. Why is a signed consent form important? It records that the customer understood the risks and your no-piracy policy. What should your repair log record? Console model, firmware, tools, dates and results.
