Upgrading Internal Drives: PS4, PS5 & Xbox

The modern drive swap

The most common storage job in any shop today: upgrading the drive in a PS4, PS5 or Xbox. Each has its own procedure, but all follow the same shape - back up, swap, reinstall, restore.

PS4 (all models)

1. Back up saves to USB or the cloud first
2. Download the full system software (PS4UPDATE.PUP) to a FAT32 USB stick
3. Open the drive bay (one screw on the Slim/Pro, hidden tray on launch models)
4. Swap in the new 2.5-inch SATA drive
5. Boot to Safe Mode and choose "Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)"
6. Restore saves and re-download games

PS5

1. Power off and remove the side panel
2. Locate the M.2 SSD bay and remove its shield screw
3. Insert the NVMe drive at an angle and secure it
4. Refit the shield and panel, then boot
5. When prompted, format the new drive for game storage

Xbox (One and Series)

• Xbox One - 2.5-inch SATA drive swap, then reinstall the OS via USB
• Series S/X - internal storage is paired to the console; the official path is the expansion card, not a bare drive swap
• External drives - plug in, format, and move games (Module 3)

Warning: On the Xbox Series S/X the internal drive is soldered or paired - opening it voids the warranty and replacing it is not a supported path. Use the official expansion card instead, or external storage.
