What the drive is really doing
A console's drive is not just a folder of games. It runs the operating system, holds installed games, provides cache space for running games, and stores saves, captures and system data. Understanding this hidden workload explains why drives slow down, why games get moved, and why capacity fills so fast.
The jobs the drive does
- System software - the OS, settings and firmware live on the drive
- Game installs - modern games copy huge amounts of data to the drive to load faster
- Cache and virtual memory - running games read and write temporary data constantly
- Saves and captures - progress, screenshots and video clips are stored locally
- Update data - game patches and system updates accumulate over time
Why capacity disappears
A "1 TB" drive is never 1 TB of games. The OS takes space, drives report size in decimal while games are counted in binary, and updates, captures and cache eat into the rest. A 1 TB console commonly shows 800 GB or less usable - before a single game.
Why drives slow down
Drives slow as they fill because the system has less contiguous space to write to, and HDDs especially suffer from fragmentation. Keeping 15-20% free headroom and periodically clearing unused games keeps any console feeling fast.
Warning: Never unplug an external drive while a console is writing to it. Interrupted writes can corrupt saves and captures that cannot be replaced. Always use the console's "safely remove" or power off first.
