Building & Organising a Game Library

Organisation & Library Management Preview

A library you can actually navigate

A thousand games is not a library, it is a mess - unless it is organised. The best collection is the one that is easy to browse, easy to search and easy to keep clean. This lesson gives you the professional system.

Difficulty: BeginnerSkill: Organisation

The organisation rules

  • Group by type - games, apps, media, tools
  • Group by mood or platform if you want - collections and folders are free
  • Name everything clearly - a save or a backup named by game and date
  • Purge regularly - delete what you no longer play; keep receipts for re-downloads
  • Keep a wishlist, not a hoard - buy and install deliberately

Using the console's own tools

Modern consoles give you folders (PS4/PS5, Xbox), collections (Switch) and search. Put your most-played games front and centre, file the rest, and use search for everything else. A tidy home screen is faster than scrolling through hundreds of titles.

The physical side

  • Store discs and carts upright in their cases, away from sun and heat
  • Keep drives labelled - which drive holds what
  • Keep backups in a labelled sleeve with the console or in a safe spot

Check your understanding

  1. What is the first rule of library organisation?Group by type and name everything clearly.
  2. Why purge games you no longer play?It keeps the library fast, tidy and easy to navigate - re-downloads keep them recoverable.
  3. How should physical discs be stored?Upright in their cases, away from sunlight and heat.

Answer the questions out loud or on paper. If any are hard, re-read this lesson before moving on.
