Firmware Versions and the Jailbreak Landscape
Version is everything
On the PS4, the modding scene lives and dies by firmware version. Unlike earlier consoles, there is no universal "jailbreak this console" tool. Each exploit supports a narrow range of firmware, and the version you are on decides what you can and cannot do.
The landscape in one picture
- Very old firmwares - some early versions have their own exploits
- 5.05 and 6.72 - historically the most supported jailbreak firmwares
- 7.02 / 9.00 - later supported versions used by most of the community
- Current firmware - usually no public jailbreak; stay updated means stay locked
The golden rule
Once a firmware is jailbroken, the community stops supporting newer versions. If you update your console, you leave the supported range and lose the jailbreak. The golden rule: never update a PS4 you want to mod.
What this means for you
Before you promise a customer anything, check the firmware. If the console is on a supported version, options exist. If it has been updated to the latest, a jailbreak is usually off the table - be honest about that up front.
Warning: Never update a customer's console "to make it work". Updating kills the possibility of modding it, and you cannot undo it.
Tip: The firmware version is in Settings > System > System Information. Read it before you do anything else.
