Why HEN first

HEN (Homebrew ENabler) is the safest entry point to PS3 modding. It runs on top of official firmware, works across many models, and can be removed more easily than CFW. For most learners and many customers, HEN is the right answer.

Before you begin

  • Confirm your model supports HEN and is on the recommended firmware
  • Complete the backup from Module 1
  • Download HEN and its payloads only from trusted sources
  • Prepare a FAT32 USB stick with the HEN files in the correct folders

The installation flow

  1. Copy the HEN package to the USB stick in the expected folder structure
  2. Connect the stick to the PS3 and install the package from Package Manager
  3. Enable the HEN browser payload by visiting the local exploit page on the PS3 browser
  4. Launch HEN from the XMB - the icon appears once enabled
  5. Confirm HEN is active (the notification appears) and test a homebrew app

After a successful install

With HEN active you can install homebrew .pkg files from the Package Manager and run them from the XMB. Keep a log of your exact model, firmware and HEN version - you will need it when you troubleshoot.

Tip: HEN needs to be re-enabled after a full power-down on some setups. This is normal, not a fault.
Warning: Only enable HEN when you need it and disable it before playing online. A modded console is far more likely to be flagged in online play.

Practical exercise

Practise on your own console:

  1. Download HEN from a trusted source and verify its checksum
  2. Install the package and enable HEN
  3. Run one legal homebrew app
  4. Document the model, firmware and HEN version
