Course PS3 Jailbreaking & Custom Firmware

Firmware Explained: OFW, CFW and HEN

Firmware Foundations Preview

Firmware is the operating system

The PS3 runs its system on firmware - software stored on flash memory that controls the whole console. Everything you can and cannot do with a PS3 is decided by which firmware it runs and whether that firmware can be replaced.

The three firmware types

  • OFW (Official Firmware) - Sony's stock software, signed and locked
  • CFW (Custom Firmware) - a full replacement system that unlocks extra features; only fits older model consoles
  • HEN (Homebrew ENabler) - a software mod added on top of official firmware; works on more models and firmware versions

The honest headline

Neither HEN nor CFW is a "make anything free" button. Their real, legal value is homebrew: apps you choose to run, backups of games you own, and customisation. Anything that downloads games you did not buy is piracy.

Tip: Think of firmware as the rules of the console. CFW rewrites the rulebook; HEN bends a few pages. Both are powerful, and both must be used responsibly.
