The right part, the first time

A repair is only as good as its parts. The cheapest listing is rarely the best deal, and a console's model number is the key that unlocks the correct part. This lesson covers sourcing, verifying and testing replacement parts before they go on the bench.

Reading the model to find the part

Every part is tied to a console family and revision. Before ordering, note down: the model number (e.g. PS4 CUH-1200), the region, and the revision. A laser for one PS4 revision may not fit another, and an Xbox One power board varies by model.

Where parts come from

• Official / certified suppliers - first choice for power supplies and main boards
• Reputable parts retailers - good for lasers, fans, connectors and batteries
• Donor consoles - the most reliable source of genuine parts, tested before fitting
• Marketplace listings - cheapest but highest risk of fakes, dead parts or wrong revisions

Verifying before fitting

• Check the part number matches the service manual for your exact model
• Inspect for physical damage - bent pins, cracked bodies, bulging caps
• Test power parts (supplies, boards) with a multimeter before installing
• Test batteries and lasers on a known-good console first when possible
• Keep receipts and part numbers in your repair log for warranty claims

Warning: If a price looks too good to be true, the part is probably a fake, a refurbished failure, or the wrong revision. A dodgy power supply can damage the board it is meant to fix.
