Charge for skill, not luck
A technician who prices badly either undercharges and starves, or overcharges and loses trust. Professional pricing is transparent, reflects real work, and leaves room for the guarantee that makes customers trust you.
Building a price
- Diagnostic fee - a fair charge for finding the fault (often waivable against the repair)
- Parts cost - the actual part price, including shipping
- Labour - your time at a rate that reflects skill and experience
- Risk - harder jobs deserve a higher price, honestly explained
- Guarantee margin - room to cover an honest warranty
The written quote
- State the fault found and the parts to be fitted
- Give a fixed price for the repair where possible
- List what the price includes (parts, labour, testing, guarantee)
- Set the validity of the quote (parts prices change)
- Get a signed agreement before starting
Guarantees that build trust
A clear guarantee is a marketing tool. Standard practice is a 30-90 day warranty on parts and labour, covering the repair work but not new faults or misuse. Write it down, honour it without argument, and customers will send you their friends.
Warning: Never "diagnose" without testing, and never start work without a signed, priced quote. Unclear pricing and unagreed work are the two fastest ways to lose a customer's trust - and their money.
