Diagnosis before surgery
Amateurs replace parts and hope. Technicians diagnose first and replace once. The difference is process: a clear, repeatable method that works whether the console is a PS2, an Xbox Series X or a Switch.
The six-step diagnostic method
- Reproduce - confirm the exact fault and the conditions that trigger it
- Isolate - split the system into blocks (power, video, storage, cooling) and identify which block is failing
- Test - use measurements and component swaps to confirm the suspect block
- Pinpoint - narrow to a specific part inside that block
- Repair - fix or replace the part with proper technique
- Verify - run a full test and document the result
Notice that replacement comes fifth, not first. Most repair disasters happen when a technician skips straight to swapping boards because they never identified the real fault.
Isolating by symptom

Tip: Write the fault down before you start. A written diagnosis keeps you honest and becomes the customer report at the end.
Common mistakes
- Replacing the most expensive part first instead of testing
- Ignoring simple causes (cables, sockets, settings) while deep inside the console
- Not re-checking after repair and declaring success too early
Practical exercise
Take a broken console and run the six-step method on paper:
- Write down the exact symptom and when it happens
- Draw the blocks (power, video, audio, storage, cooling, input)
- Decide which block fails - and justify it
- List the tests you would run on that block
