The PlayStation 2 launched in March 2000 in Japan and October 2000 in North America. It went on to sell more than 155 million units, making it the best-selling games console of all time. That means a huge number of PS2 systems are still out there - and still failing, which is exactly why PS2 repair skills are in demand.

The PS2 was a huge leap over the original PlayStation. It brought a powerful custom CPU, DVD playback, and later a growing library of thousands of games. Understanding what is inside is the first step to fixing anything.

• Graphics Synthesizer (GS) - the dedicated GPU with 4 MB of embedded memory
