Installing PixelLab and Setting Up
Set up for success
A correct installation and a few minutes of setup save you hours of frustration later. PixelLab is free, but a couple of settings - like background access and folder permissions - decide whether saving and exporting works smoothly.
Install and update
- Open the Google Play Store and search for "PixelLab"
- Choose the app published by Appn (the official developer)
- Tap Install and wait for it to finish
- Open the app once and allow notifications if it asks (optional)
Allow storage access
When PixelLab asks to access your photos and files, tap Allow. This lets the app save your designs to your phone and import your own images. On newer Android versions, granting photo access is enough - PixelLab will only see the files you choose.
Choose a project size
- 1080 x 1080 px - perfect for Instagram square posts and WhatsApp statuses
- 1080 x 1920 px - story and reel sizes, also good for mobile wallpapers
- A4 (2480 x 3508 px) - for printing posters and flyers
- Custom - type your own width and height for any job
Tip: Start every new design by choosing the right size FIRST. Changing the canvas size after you have arranged layers rarely looks the same.
Warning: Do not download "PixelLab Pro" from random websites. The official app is free on Google Play - side-loaded "Pro" versions often hide ads or malware.
Practical exercise
Set up your phone now:
- Install PixelLab from Google Play and open it
- Allow the storage permission it requests
- Create a new project at 1080 x 1080 px
- Give the project a name and save it
