What Is Graphic Design?
Design is problem solving with visuals
Graphic design is the art of arranging text, images and colour to communicate a message clearly. It is not about making things "pretty" - it is about solving a communication problem: a poster that sells, a logo that builds trust, a flyer that gets read.
Where design is everywhere
- Branding - logos, colour schemes and fonts that identify a business
- Advertising - posters, flyers, billboards and social ads
- Publishing - books, magazines, newsletters and reports
- Digital - websites, apps, YouTube thumbnails and social posts
- Packaging - the labels and boxes on products
How designers think
Before touching a tool, a designer answers three questions: Who is the audience? What is the one message? Where will this design be seen? The answers drive every choice - colours, fonts, size and layout.
Tools of the trade
You do not need expensive software to design. For this course, free tools are enough: Canva in the browser for most projects, and GIMP or Photopea for advanced image editing.
Tip: Train your eye by studying real designs you admire - posters, logos, magazine covers - and ask why each one works.
Practical exercise
Think like a designer:
- Pick a poster or ad you like
- Write down who it is for and what message it carries
- Note the colours, fonts and layout used
- Say out loud why it works
